Zeferino O. "Shorty" Reyes, 96, a longtime resident of Hereford, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, in Hereford. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 12, 2024, at San Jose Catholic Church at 11:00 AM with Celebrant Monsignor Arturo Meza officiating. Burial to follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery. Arrangements and services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford, Texas. A viewing will be held on Sunday, August 11, 2024, from 3:00 -8:00 PM with rosary at 6:00 PM at the funeral home.

Zeferino was born on November 21, 1927, in Chihuahua, Mexico, to Marcos and Augustina (Ontiveros) Reyes. Zeferino has been a resident of Hereford for 55 years. He married the love of his life Maria de la Luz Minjarez de Reyes on July 4, 1951. Zeferino, better known as "Shorty" to his feedyard buddies, drove a feed truck for United Beef, Champion Feeders, Pitman Feedyard and Barrett and Crofoot-West for many years. He enjoyed the horse races, listening to music, raising cattle on his ranch, watching the news and loved making his hot sauce he was so proud of; he was an avid Dallas Cowboy and Chiefs fan.  Zeferino had many traits and hobbies, but his favorite was his family and grandchildren and spending time with them. His presence, smile and laughter will be missed by all that loved him dearly.

Zeferino leaves behind to cherish his memories his children, Lori Gonzales of Hereford, Texas, Mel Reyes of Dallas, Texas, Lucy Aguirre and her husband Richard of Denver, Colorado, Cookie Taylor and her husband Todd of Hereford, Texas, and Irma Sauceda and her husband Richard of Hereford, Texas; 13 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, brother, Isidro Reyes and wife Margarita of Carlsbad, NM, and sister-in-law, Juanita Reyes of Waco, TX.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Maria de la Luz Minjarez de Reyes, son, B.J. Reyes, brother, Jesus Reyes, sister, Soledad Ruiz, brother, Guerrero Reyes, brother, Jose Reyes, and brother, Rosario Reyes.
