Veatrice N. "Sookie" Johnson, 58, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on Monday, November 3, 2025, in Amarillo.

Veatrice was born on April 19, 1967, in Amarillo, Texas to Homer Sr. and Clara Lee (Smith) Johnson. She attended school at the Children's Rehabilitation Center, Bivins Elementary School, Fannon Middle School and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1985. Veatrice earned her associate's degree in social work in 2021 at Amarillo College.

Veatrice served with the Knights Association in Amarillo, donating bikes to kids for good grades, in remembrance of her brother in 1996. She was enthusiastic about advocacy; believing in standing up for those who could not help themselves and encouraging others to stand up for their rights. She was passionate about black history, politics, and participating in Town Hall meetings. Veatrice enjoyed writing poetry and coloring on her phone. She was strong-willed, crafty, resourceful, and goal oriented.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Clara Johnson; her daughter, Theoana Nash; and her siblings, Homer Johnson, Jr., Rubbie Shannon Phea, and William Arnold Smith.

Those left to cherish her memories are her daughter Ykevia Johnson of Amarillo, Texas; son Terry Thomas of Hereford, Texas; three grandchildren Amir Kareem, Rasheed Kareem, and Polo Johnson; sisters JoLynn Johnson of Maples, Texas and Eliza Ruth Stewart of Dallas, Texas; brother Robb Crain of Amarillo, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life Service for Veatrice will be on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home in Hereford. Viewing and Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday. Burial to follow funeral service at West Park Cemetery in Hereford under the direction of Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home.
