Thelma Jean Mercer, 75, of Hereford, Texas passed away Friday, April 24, 2020 in Hereford. Celebration of Life Service will be Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at 10:00 AM with Dennis Latham officiating at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home Chapel. Viewing will be Monday, April 27, 2020 from 3:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home. Graveside service will be Wednesday, April 29, 2020, 11:00 AM with Dr. Jimmy Hunter officiating at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, Texas. Due to the mandates that have been placed because of the COVID-19 virus, the funeral home can only allow 10 people in the funeral home at one time. Celebrating the life of Thelma J Mercer. Thelma Jean Mercer was born November 19, 1944 to the parents of Ramos Beck and Bennie Jewell Franklin-Beck in Teague, Texas. She was the seventh child of eight children. Thelma attended J.A. Brooks Elementary, Booker T. Washington High School, and graduated from Dunbar High School in Munday Texas in 1963. She confessed Christ at an early age at the Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Teague, Texas. After graduating from high school, she moved to Hereford, Texas and met the love of her life, Robert Mercer. They shared 54 years of married life together. Their union was blessed with two children, Renee Scott and Anthony Mercer. Thelma worked as a butcher assistant with Safeway Grocery. She later went to work at Gaston's Clothing store and through hard work she and her husband became the owners of Gaston's Clothing for more than 30 years. Thelma spent much of her life fulfilling her spiritual gift of caring for and serving others. She had an infectious personality that made everyone love her. Not only was Thelma a caring and serving person, she was loving, humorous, supportive, devoted, generous, friendly and most of all she was kindhearted. Thelma was known by everyone and a friend to all.

Those left to cherish her memories are her husband Robert Mercer of Hereford, Texas; daughter Renee Scott of McKinney, Texas; son Anthony Mercer of Tulia, Texas; sisters: Olivia Bradfield of San Francisco, California, Bennie Williams of Waco, Texas and Gloria Hunter of Hereford, Texas; granddaughters: Jocelyn and Jaelen Scott; 2 brothers-in-law: Jim Scott, Sr. of Hereford, Texas, and Melvin Mercer of Hearne, Texas; 5 sisters-in-law: Mary Beck of Dallas, Texas, Twana Moten of Longview, Texas, Ann Mercer of Amarillo, Texas, Marsha Mercer of Bryan, Texas, and Henrietta Mercer of Hearne, Texas, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ramos and Bennie Beck, sisters: Luther Mae Satchell, Clydean Scott, and Magalene Shed; brother Kendell Beck.

The family suggests that memorials be made to BSA Harrington Cancer Center, 1500 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, Texas 79106 and Hereford Satellite Center, 218 N 25 Mile Avenue, Hereford, Texas 79045.

Family would like to express their profound thanks and sincere gratitude for all expressions of love in both prayers and deeds. A sincere gratitude to Rex and Shirley Easterwood, Dr. Howard Johnson and Dr. Pruitt and Karen Barichello from BSA Harrington Caner Center. They ask for your continued prayers that the comforting ministry of God's Spirit will embrace them and that the peace of God that surpasses all understanding would be their companion.
