Opal Walterscheid, 88, of Hereford, Texas passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, in Amarillo, Texas. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, May 6, 2022, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Father Nick Gerber as celebrant. Burial to follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Hereford. Arrangements and services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford, Texas. A viewing will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022, from 5:00 -7:00 P.M. at the funeral home with rosary beginning at 6:00 P.M.

Opal was born on January 6, 1934, in St. Francis, Texas to Charles F. Raef and Inez E. (Jackson) Raef. She graduated from Panhandle High School in 1952 and was Salutatorian of her class. Opal married Leonard W. Walterscheid in St. Francis, Texas on January 11, 1955, they were blessed with 67 wonderful years together. Opal worked at American National Bank in Amarillo, Texas from June of 1952 to December of 1955, at Amarillo National from 1958 to 1959, and at Hereford State Bank from July 1, 1969, until retirement on June 30, 1997. Opal served on the St. Anthony's advisory board, the Kids Inc. advisory board, and was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Christian Mothers.

Opal also known as Maw Maw to her grandchildren and O'Pal to her husband was devoted to God, her husband, and her family. She was very proud of her grandchildren and enjoyed watching and following all their activities whether it was school events, games, or dance recitals. She loved gardening and flowers, especially coral geraniums. She was an avid Rangers fan, loved to read, do crossword puzzles, and puzzle books.

Those left to cherish her memories are her husband, Leonard W. Walterscheid of Hereford, Texas; children, Donna Kemp and husband Thomas of Wiggins, Colorado, Doug Walterscheid and wife Lori of Amarillo, Texas, Brenda Jones and husband David of Canyon, Texas, Lindy Yosten and husband Gregg of Hereford, Texas, Kari Strader and husband Patrick of Houston, Texas, and Lori Massie and husband Kent of Amarillo, Texas; fourteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and sisters, Ruby Gabel of Amarillo, Texas and Pearl Berres of Lubbock, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Inez Raef and siblings, Frank Raef, Anna Lewter, Leo Raef, Fred Raef, Edith Beckman, and Edmond Raef.
