Maria Mata Leon, 95, of Hereford, Texas passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2020 in Hereford. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at 10:00 AM at San Jose Catholic Church with Father Nestor Lara as celebrant, burial to follow at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements and services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford. Viewing will be held on Friday, November 27, 2020 from 3:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home, with Rosary being recited at 6:00 PM. Due to the COVID-19 virus, everyone attending viewing and Mass must wear a mask provided by you. Your health and safety matter to us.

Maria was born on October 31, 1925 to Gabriel and Marcilena (Leon) Mata in Penon Blanco, Durango, Mexico. Maria married Catarino Leon in Mexico on December 23, 1941.  She has been a resident of Hereford for the last sixty years. She was a homemaker and took great pride in taking care of and raising her family. She was a member of San Jose Catholic Church. Maria enjoyed cooking, tortillas, mexican food and chicken. She loved gardening and roses were her favorite flower.

Those left to cherish her memories are her daughters: Rosa Contreras and her husband Larry of Hereford, TX, LaLa Sawyers of California, and  Mary Brown and her husband Bill of Washburn, TX; sons: Reymundo Leon of Hereford, TX, Ricky Leon and his wife Irene of Midland, TX and Catarino Leon, Jr. of Hereford, TX; brother Delores Mata of Penon Blanco, Durango, MX; thirty-two grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Maria is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Catarino Leon, two sons: Victor Leon and Martin Leon, a daughter Gabriella Sanchez, several siblings, and two grandchildren: Lorenzo Contreras and Richard Sanchez.
