Kenneth Wayne Hagar was born in Amarillo, Texas on January 10, 1950 as the middle son of W.P. (Hap) and Mary Kay Hagar.  The family moved to Littlefield, Texas a few years later, and Kenney (as he was known to his friends for the rest of his life) spent his childhood with his brothers, sister, and best friend, Jerry Fudge, running the streets, playgrounds and baseball fields of Littlefield.

The Hagars moved to Hereford when Kenney was in middle school.  He quickly became a star on the local baseball teams.  He played third base for the Whitefaces as a three-year letterman from 1966-1968.  He told glorious tall-tales of those baseball days for the rest of his life.  Kenney was a social young man and met many of his lifelong friends at Hereford High School, friends he would stay loyal to, through good times and bad, for the rest of their lives.

He also met Shannon Jo Watson at Hereford High School.  They quickly fell in love, became inseparable, and married in 1969, one year after high school graduation.  They remained married and inseparable for the next 55 years, until his passing on Saturday.  Kenney and Shannon formed a bond and partnership strong enough to celebrate all of life's milestones while also weathering its many hardships.  They have been fixtures of the Hereford community for the past six decades.

After a brief college baseball career, Kenney returned to Hereford and went to work as a land surveyor for A.J. (Major) Schroeter.  Kenney found his life's mentor in Major, and his life's calling and career as a land surveyor.  He self-taught himself trigonometry and advanced mathematics to pass the state boards and become a Texas Registered Public Surveyor in 1975.  He worked with Mr. Schroeter until Major's death in the early 1980's when Kenney formed Hagar & Associates, a company he later merged with two other Panhandle companies to create Hagar, Brown and Dorsey Surveyors.  Surveying was Kenney's passion.  He took immense pride in his expertise and knowledge of the blocks, sections and parcels of the Texas Panhandle.

Kenney and Shannon welcomed their only child, Kelby Dane Hagar, into the world in 1970.  Kenney was a dedicated father.  He coached little league baseball and flag football, participated in Indian Guides, took uncounted family vacations, and along the way, taught Kelby the life skills of hard work, perseverance, and dedication that served Kenney so well.  Kenney and Shannon were blessed with one grandchild, Trenton Allen Hagar.  Trent became the joy of their lives, and they reveled in days with him at their property north of Hereford playing on the water toys, forts and electric vehicles with which they spoiled him.

Kenney also found plenty of time to play and enjoy his friends and family.  He played softball with the McCracken Toters well past the time when his body told him to quit.  He was an avid golfer and fixture at John Pitman Municipal Golf Course throughout the 70's, 80's and 90's.  And, he was a regular at card tables around Hereford for years.  He was also a world-class storyteller.  Every family holiday and friend gathering ended with Kenney holding court, telling stories and having everyone in the room rolling with laughter.

Kenney was also an active member of the Hereford community. He served as a public official for over thirty years being first elected the Deaf Smith County Public Surveyor in 1982.  He held the position until his retirement in 2016.   Kenney was also a member of the U.S. Selective Service Committee for over ten years in the 80's and 90's.  He was active with Kid's Inc., where he helped construct the baseball fields on Avenue K.  He manned the baseball doll-throw booth for 15 years at the Hereford Lions Club carnival, and was a member of Avenue Baptist Church.  He also spent hundreds of hours mentoring the young men that worked for him or played on his baseball teams.

Kenney passed away on Saturday, February 15th in Dallas, Texas and leaves behind a large and loving family.  He is survived by his wife, Shannon, his son, Kelby, and his grandson, Trent.   He is also survived by his three siblings, Paul Hagar and his wife, Linda Hagar; John Hagar; and Kenney's sister, Kay Borman and her husband Jerry Borman.  He is also survived by Shannon's sister, Connie Urbanczyk and her husband Conrad (Connie) Urbanczyk; and their sister in law, Cecilia Watson.  He is also survived by Kelby's extended family where he is lovingly known as "Grampy", a large number of nieces and nephews who will miss their "Uncle Kenney", and lots and lots of friends who adored their friend, Kenney.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Hap and MaryKay Hagar, his brother-in-law, Terry Watson, his sister-in-law, Noel Hagar, and his daughter-in-law, Brenda Hagar.
