John Alton Wilson, Jr. (Gandy) of Dawn, Texas passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020 in Amarillo, Texas. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 31, 2020 at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Hereford, Texas with BJ Gililland officiating. Arrangements and cremation services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford, Texas. Viewing will be Wednesday, December 30, 2020 from 3:00-8:00PM at the funeral home. A face mask is required at both the viewing and the funeral service. Your health and safety matter to us.

John Alton Wilson, Jr. was born April 24, 1951 in Sayre, Oklahoma to John Alton Wilson, Sr., and Norma Jean Kerr. John graduated from Amarillo High in 1969 and soon after married his wife of 50 years, Pamela Gail Ward on August 6, 1970. He received his Bachelor of Animal Science from West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas in 1973.

John spent his working career as a plant manager for grain handling facilities with his last place of employment at Gayland Ward Seed, where he worked for 18 years. There were many past time activities he enjoyed pursuing with his family. John shared his passion for the outdoors with those he cared about most and took great pride in teaching the traditions and techniques of the generations preceding him. He was renowned for hunting, fishing, cooking at chuckwagon competitions and shooting guns for the Single Action Shooting Society, of which went by the alias "Belly Cheater." John was meticulous and authentic in every way and always had to have perfectly planned and historically appropriate attire. He also served as a volunteer fire fighter for the Dawn Fire Department for 30 years.

John Wilson was a rare and genuine man in the words of Doc Holliday he might remark, "There's no normal life, there's just life. Now get on with it."

John Wilson was preceded in death by his parents John Alton Wilson, Sr., and Norma Jean Kerr. He is survived by his wife Pam Wilson and his children John Wilson of Hereford, Texas, Brian Wilson, and fiancée Lisa Sheffield of Quihi, Texas, Stephanie Kennedy and husband Shawn of Amarillo, Texas and Jay Wilson and Brandi Batenhorst of Hereford, Texas, a sister Jeanette Hooper and husband Vic of Crescent, OK.

His biggest pride and joy in life were his grandchildren Jayci Trice, Brooklyn Kennedy, McKenzie Wilson, Tristan Wilson, Madeline Kennedy, and Ryker Wilson. As well as, Garrett Busby, Bodey Busby and Trypp Busby.

Family suggest that in lieu of flowers the public may donate to their favorite charity.
