John Steven Wilson, 67 of Hereford, Texas passed away on Monday March 21, 2022. Memorial Services will be Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 4:00 PM at Spicer Gripp Arena.

John, the son of Glenn and Claudia Wilson, was born in Hereford, Texas on April 3, 1954. His love for the western way of life was bred into him by his father, grandfathers, and great grandfathers. He spent most of his life horseback caring for cattle and logging millions of miles running down the road rodeoing. Being horseback with no cell phone service or buildings in sight is how John preferred to spend his day. John was a natural horseman, it came easy to him and he took pride in making great horses.

John was an original member of the Tri-State High School Rodeo Association founded in 1970. He and many of his long-time rodeo friends built the foundation for the High School Rodeo Association of the Texas Panhandle. After graduating from Hereford High School went onto college at South Plains where he rodeoed. After a brief stint at South Plains, he went on the road Pro Rodeoing and travelling all over the US doing what he loved.

John was very proud of his three children and handed down his love of the western way of life to them. If he was not horseback himself, he spent his spare time teaching, practicing, and hauling the kids many miles to jr. and high school rodeos. He and his son worked side by side together training horses and looking after cattle.

Left to live out his legacy are his three children, daughter Johna Myers of Canyon, son Rodey and wife Brooke of Canyon and daughter Kayli Tisdale and husband Zane of Canyon. Mother of his children, Vicki Wilson of Canyon. Three grandchildren, Rylee Wilson of Andrews, Cooper Myers of Canyon, and Lillian Tisdale of Canyon. Sister Debra Wilson of El Paso, brother Allen Wilson and wife Jannet of Hereford, sister Judy Nicholson and husband Jim of Canadian. Numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. John's grandchildren were the light of his life. He enjoyed teaching them how to swing a rope, watching their impromptu talent shows and karaoke sessions and eating popsicles on the porch.

John was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents Glenn & Claudia Wilson, twin brothers Ronald and Donald, niece Misty and nephew Marty.

John was known to many as "The Modern Day John Wayne". John was a cowboy to his core. It was in his blood. There wasn't a day in his life that he woke up and didn't want to be a cowboy. He was old school, gritty and probably the toughest man most will ever encounter.
