Joan Yarbro, age 100 of Hereford, TX, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2023 after a short battle with pneumonia. Joan was born on October 19, 1922 in Boswell, Oklahoma to James Vernon and Lora Susan Pickens.

She was one of eight children and grew up in Rio Hondo, Texas. She was a member of the girls basketball team and the first baseman for the Champion Spring Fever Girls Softball league. She graduated from Rio Hondo High School in 1939, and moved to Elsa, Texas where she met the love of her life. She married Robert N. (Bill) Yarbro on February 11, 1942 and after the birth of their first daughter, Suzanne, the couple moved to Hereford in 1947.

Joan was a wonderful, dedicated homemaker and mother to 3 beautiful daughters. She was a Campfire Girls Leader, Hereford Garden Club Member, and member of the Hereford Fellowship of Believers. She was an active member of the Hereford Senior Citizens line dancers, Red Hatters Ladies Group, and Hereford Study Club for over 50 years.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Cathy Guseman of Cave Creek, Arizona, a great-grandson, Christopher Guseman of Cave Creek, Arizona, a son in-law, Johnny Wall of Hereford, Texas, as well as her 6 siblings, Cornelia Pickens, Homer Pickens, Jack Pickens, Betty Sue Paetzold, Richard "Buddy" Pickens, and Jane Wilson.

Those left to cherish Joan's memory are her children, Suzanne Smith and husband Ron Smith of Corsicana, Judy Moore and husband Troy Don Moore of Hereford, and Chip Guseman of Cave Creek, Arizona, six grandchildren, Stacy and husband Chuck Mitchell, Bric and wife Nikki Wall, Zack and wife Catie Wall, Gus Guseman, Thad and wife Lauren Guseman, and Amanda and husband Migy Head, and 12 beautiful great grandchildren as well as her sister, Ruth Newsom of Amarillo and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their gratitude to our mother's medical team at Hereford Regional Medical Center and friends, Bill and Patty Dirks, for your commitment and compassion.

Viewing and Visitation with the family at Mendez & Mullins Family Funeral Home on Friday, June 2, 2023 from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by a Service at Mendez & Mullins Chapel on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 2 p.m.  The family would suggest memorials be made to the Hereford Senior Citizens, Hereford Fellowship of Believers, or charity of your choice.
