Herbert Francis Vogel of Hereford, TX passed peacefully in his home Friday, April 14, 2023, four days short of his 95th birthday.  His family was blessed to gather the prior Easter weekend to celebrate his upcoming birthday.

Visitation will begin Thursday, April 20 at 2pm at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home.  Rosary will be said at 5:30pm.  Funeral Mass will be held Friday, April 21 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hereford at 10:00am with Father Grant Spinhirne officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Hereford.

Herb was born April 18, 1928, near Harper, Iowa, in Clear Creek Township, Keokuk County, Iowa to Carl and Berniece (Peiffer) Vogel.  Herb graduated from Sigourney High School in 1948.

Herb met Elizabeth Adam when his older brother Charles married her older sister Bernice.  Herb and Elizabeth were married November 24, 1951, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, an historic country church near Harper, Iowa.  The couple farmed near Keystone, Iowa, raising corn, soybeans, hay, cattle, hogs, and chickens.  Twice, in 1960 and 1961, Herb was named Iowa's Master Corn Grower, for having the highest bushel per acre corn crop yield in the State.

In 1969, the Vogel family moved to Hereford, Texas where Herb worked on a new feedyard being constructed.  He later became self-employed as a cattle buyer.  Herb was very involved with his sons with stock shows and prize-winning 4-H cattle projects.  In 1993, Herb was named Father of the Year by KPAN radio station.

The country landscape around Hereford changed after Herb worked seven years organizing landowners and contracting with a wind turbine company.  At age 80, he initiated contact with turbine companies and was delighted when the project finally came to fruition.  The windfarm dedication and ribbon cutting was held April 17, 2015.

Herb was proud of his family and had a strong Catholic faith. He was a First Degree Knight member of the Knights of Columbus. The couple was always ready for a party and a dance.  In his later years, Herb enjoyed socializing with his McDonald's coffee friends.

Herb is preceded in death by son Gary Vogel, son-in-law Lynn Brisendine and great-grandson Hayden Stephens.  Herb is also predeceased by his parents, older brother and sister-in-law Charles and Bernice Vogel of Blairstown, Iowa and twin brother and sister-in-law Hubert and Marge Vogel of Casper, Wyoming.

Survivors include his wife Elizabeth of the home, children: Linda Brisendine of Brownfield; Julie Koenig and husband Dan of LasCruces, NM; Kathy Kuper and husband Joe of Lubbock; Carole Bishop and husband Mickey of Granbury, TX; Larry Vogel of San Antonio; LeAnne Vogel of Canyon; Randy Vogel and wife Tamara of Plainview; and Rick Vogel and wife Stacy of Amarillo.

Grandchildren and spouses include Becky and Brian Stephens, Barbie and Alan Taylor, Brian and Susan Brisendine; Jennifer and Joe Provenzano, Jason and Leah Koenig; Kevin and Jennifer Kuper, Kim and Brent Holdridge; Jeremy and Toya Bishop, Jaci and Brian McCarty, Jeff and Nicole Bishop; Tyler and Laci Vogel, Jordan Vogel; Konstanze and Cory Hardy, Kreighton and Ethan Biggs; Chandler and Dominic Yearego and Bennett Vogel. The couple had 34 great grandchildren.
