Gene Oakley, 79, of Hereford, Texas passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2021, in Hereford. Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be Friday, August 6, 2021, at 4:00 PM at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home chapel. Arrangements and cremation services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford, Texas.

Gene Oakley was born January 18, 1942, to Hughie and Ethel Oakley. He was born and raised in Telephone, Texas. Gene enjoyed hunting and all that it entailed. He was an avid woodworker and made several beautiful pieces, not only for the school in which he worked, but family and friends as well. He enjoyed his gambling trips and listening to his golden oldies and country story songs while traveling. Gene loved his dogs and always seemed to have a few. He was a quiet man with a huge heart. He was not only quick to help others but those who knew him well will always remember his quick wit and sense of humor. He was a highly intelligent individual and knew a lot about many things.

Gene did various jobs in his younger years and spent many hours in the cab of a gravel truck. He later found a job at Walcott School, where he spent his last 35 years employed.

Those left to cherish Gene's life are his four children, Sherri, Debbie, Jeannie, and Greg. On January 1, 1991, he married Pam and acquired four stepchildren, Tandy, Amber, Christy, and Trina, who he loved as his own. Gene has four sisters, Margie Dawson, Doris Strain, Linda Mock and Bonnie Bell, and five half siblings, James, David, Shirley, Kristina, and Billy. Gene will be missed by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Debbie Oakley and his grandson, Trey Lamont.
