Elsie Verna Elizabeth (West) Lloyd, 93, a longtime resident of Hereford, Texas, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2025, in Hereford, Texas. A family and friend visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at the Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home from 10:30-11:30 AM. A private family graveside service will take place prior to the visitation at West Park Cemetery with family friend Joe D. Rogers officiating. Honorary Pallbearers are Blake Altman, Tanner Altman, Trent Altman, Landry Lloyd, Robert Lloyd, West Peterson, Hagen Purdue and Emerson Keller. Arrangements and services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford, Texas.

Elsie Verna Elizabeth (West) Lloyd was born on March 25, 1932, to Lewis Edward and Eunie Verna (Lesly) West in their home just north of Post, Texas. Elsie grew up in Post until her parents moved to Deaf Smith County, bought a farm near Hereford, Texas and started building a home after her junior year in high school.  Her parents lived in a grainary while they were building their home, so Elsie went to live with her sister, Odie and her husband, Jay Claborn in McLean, Texas for the first semester of her senior year of high school.  She moved back in with her parents once the home was completed and graduated from Hereford High School in 1949.

After graduating high school, Elsie attended school at West Texas State College in Canyon, Texas; the first member of her family to attend college.  She earned an Associate Degree in Accounting after two years.  During her time in college, she was on an intramural women's basketball team.  A teammate and close friend, Wanda Robinson, from nearby Friona, Texas, introduced her to a friend in Friona, Robert Lloyd.  They were married in Clovis, New Mexico on January 20, 1951.

At various times, they lived in Hereford, Friona and Knox City while Robert worked at different jobs. They eventually settled on a section of land leased from Elsie's dad in northern Deaf Smith County in 1959.  They farmed there for 45 years, raising their five children and enjoying grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Elsie seemed to have oatmeal cookies and/or homemade ice cream (banana was Robert's favorite) on hand for every family event.

With 5 children, there were always ongoing activities.  First, Elsie made sure all of her children attended church at the 1st Baptist Church in Adrian (20+ miles away).  She also made sure that they could all dance.  Either Robert or Elsie (usually both) attended every basketball game any of their kids played in; 5 kids over 14 years is a lot of basketball!  They supported all their kids showing steers at county, TriState (Amarillo) and State (Dallas) fairs in Texas.  Elsie and Robert were both very proud that they were able to send all five of their children to college; Billy and Vicki graduated from Texas A&M University while Beth, Ricky and Randy all earned degrees from Texas Tech University.

Elsie did have hobbies.  She spent time square dancing at the Simms Community Center and all her children cherish the items she tole painted through the years – often the pieces were cut out of wood and shaped by Robert.  She also found time to make Levi quilts (from Robert's old jeans) for all her sons and grandsons.  Probably her favorite pastime with her husband, was the many, many nights playing bridge, especially with good friends Doris and Lawrence Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Leon Lloyd, her parents and her 4 siblings; Odie Velma (West) Claborn, Samie Edward West, William Glen West and Peggy Joe West.

She is survived by her children, William 'Billy' Robert (Mariana) Lloyd of Edmond, OK; Odie Beth Altman of Hereford, TX; Vicki Lynn (Dave) Peterson of Hereford, TX; Ricky Lewis (Stacie) Lloyd of Canyon, TX and Randy West (Joni) Lloyd of North Platte, NE; eleven grandchildren (Melissa, Jenessa, Carli, Blake, Tanner, Kayla, Trent, West, Landry, Robert and Barbara) and twenty-one  great grandchildren (and one on the way).

We miss our mother . . . but only until we see her again.
