Dwayne Eugene Cassels

Born January 7, 1942 in Hereford, Texas, passed away January 21, 2021. He was just 79 years old. A Celebration of Life Service for family will be held on Monday, January 25, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at Fellowship of Believers Church with Pastor Danny Mize officiating. Arrangements and cremation services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford, Texas.

Dwayne had one of those ferocious diseases that just takes your mind. We don't know anything about these diseases, no two are the same other than they carry the flag of suffering until you go. We called it dementia and it didn't really take as long as some cases do and for that we are thankful. His oldest son, Jeff Cassels and his wife, Ann Cassels, were with him when he passed, and for that we are grateful.

He was Hereford, Texas from the soles of his feet to the top of his bald head. His granddad, George Washington Cassels, moved to Hereford and built a dug-out where the family lived until he could raise a roof on that property at the end of Kibbee Street. In the 50s his dad, Malcolm, died from a heart attack after working on the roof of that same house. Dwayne was only a teenager when he lost his dad and was with him when he passed. Dwayne played football at Hereford High and afterwards he went straight to farming Deaf Smith county soil, and he got pretty good at it. He always started his day by having coffee at Milo Center with all of his buddies. He loved his family. He was a good Daddy and an outstanding Granddad. He became a father when he was 20 years old and he loved and took great care of his kids.

But he was Hereford. He loved to drive around town and give a big wave to all he knew. He very rarely left the county he was born in and that was just fine with him. He did pick up golf later in life. He was probably 40 before he started playing regularly and he loved to win playing golf. He played Pitman Municipal often until he just couldn't do it anymore. He never had a desire to shake the Deaf Smith County dust off his boots. He was Hereford through and through.

His biggest legacy is his family. He has an outstanding crew of God fearing, light bearing, Bible believing bunch of salty people. Now they are marrying salty people and having salty kids. I am specifically talking about his grandkids. It really is unbelievable. Sometime a long time ago, God decided he was going to call this crew and they were going to answer. They have all honored God and Dwayne with their lives, and they are just getting started...

We will miss him greatly; we know the Lord Jesus loves him dearly.

Preceded in death by his parents: Malcolm and Jewel Cassels, Tom Hargrave his step-father; one sister Mary Nell Hendricks; brothers Jimmy Cassels, Butch Hargrave and Joe Hargrave.

Survivors include Cindy Ingram Cassels, his wife of 30 years; his children: Jeff and Ann Cassels of Plano, Texas, Kelly and Lisa Cassels of Roswell, New Mexico, Kristen Hicks and husband Kent of Hereford, Briar Head of Hereford; nine grandchildren: Sam and Kathryn Cassels, of Centreville, Virginia, Ben Cassels of Plano, Texas, Haley Rutherford and husband Will of Midland, Texas, Jack and Sydney Cassels, of Dallas, Texas, Lexi Fisher and husband Caleb of Washington, D.C., Kaden and Averye Hicks of Lubbock, Texas, Kamille Hicks of Lubbock, Gunner Head, of Norman, Oklahoma, and Slade Head of Hereford; two great-grandsons: Rawlins Mack Rutherford of Midland, Texas and Charlie Beckett Cassels of Dallas, Texas; siblings: Joe Pat and Anne Cassels, Tom and Nancy Hargrave, Ken and Cheryl Hargrave, and sisters-in-law, Jo Linda Hargrave and Gloria Hargrave.
