Dorothy (Stringer) Charest, long time resident of Hereford, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024, surrounded by family at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Hickory Creek, Texas.

Dorothy was born on August 10, 1934, in Huntington, Texas. She graduated from Dumas High School in 1952. She met her husband, George W. Stringer, in Dumas and they were married in 1952. They later moved to Hereford, Texas to begin their life. Together they built a happy life in the country raising cattle, riding horses, and enjoying watching their three girls rodeo. They were members of The First Assembly of God Church where Dorothy enjoyed teaching Sunday school and helping with Vacation Bible School and other church activities. Dorothy was a homemaker and enjoyed canning her own vegetables and peaches from her garden.

In 1974, after twenty-two years of marriage, she tragically lost her husband George. With strength and faith in God, she sold the family home, horses and cattle, and moved into town to build a new life for her and her youngest daughter. She proudly completed her college education, and she was the first member of her family to not only graduate from college but to earn a master's degree. Dorothy was a dedicated and loving special education teacher for over twenty years and later became a diagnostician. She selflessly served Dimmit ISD and Hereford ISD.

She was blessed with a second love and married Melvin Charest in 1981. They were both avid golfers and could be found almost daily on the golf course playing with friends or playing in partner tournaments.

Dorothy loved her family and friends and had a strong faith in God. She was a devoted and loving mother of three daughters, a grandmother of five, great grandmother of three, and a friend to many. In her later years, she enjoyed sitting outdoors admiring nature and feeding the cardinals, bluejays, and squirrels. She loved gardening and planting flowers. She loved all animals, especially her loyal dog, Molly who was never far from her side.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Vicki Mulkey and husband Fred of Pampa, Texas; Deborah Bullard of Amarillo, Texas; and Tammy Lea and husband Kelly of Hickory Creek, Texas. She leaves behind a legacy in her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Kendra Albert of Pampa, Texas; Jesica Grimes of Amarillo, Texas; Chase Bullard of Amarillo, Texas; Kelci Atkins of Houston, Texas; Tyler Lea of Dallas, Texas; Brady Albert of Pampa, Texas; Bella Bohannon of Amarillo, Texas; and Harper Smith Bullard of Amarillo, Texas. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Jewel and Carrie Chambers of Dumas, Texas; her husband George Stringer and Melvin Charest; her brother James Taylor of Dumas, Texas; and her sister Laverne Dean of Liberal, Kansas.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Mendez & Mullins Family Funeral Home in Hereford, Texas from 5-7 pm. Services will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024, at the Hereford Church of the Nazarene, at 10:00 am with Pastor Ted Taylor officiating. Burial to follow at West Park Cemtery under the direction of Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home.
