Ada Doris Johnson, 90 years old went home to her Lord and Savior, Tuesday, September 24, 2019.
A Graveside Celebration of Life Service is scheduled for Saturday, September 28, 2019, 10:00 a.m., at Rest Lawn Cemetery, 3985 US-385, Hereford, TX with Dr. Gene Meacham officiating. Visitation will be Friday evening, September 27, 2019, 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Mendez & Mullins Family Funeral Home, 105 Greenwood Street, Hereford, TX. Services are under the direction of Mendez & Mullins Family Funeral Home.
Doris was born to Lewis Allen and Mary Elizabeth Smith, October 3, 1928 in Hereford, TX. She was the youngest of five girls. Doris and her family lived in and managed the Dawn Hotel. She attended Canyon schools, including West Texas High, a demonstration school of West Texas College. Doris graduated from West Texas College with a degree in Home Economics.
Doris married Robert Leroy (Jiggs) Johnson June 30, 1951 in Dawn, TX. They met while Doris was teaching Homemaking in Muleshoe, TX. She was teaching Leroy's sister, Madge, who thought the two should meet and the rest is history. Leroy and Doris moved Southeast of Friona in 1952 then later moved 6 miles East of Hereford to farm with Doris' father, L.A. Smith, in 1954. At first, they raised laying hens, along with the regular farming operation of hay, wheat and feed. Later they raised pigs and finally turned to feeder steers. Doris and Leroy were married 34 years, when he passed away on December 27, 1985.
Doris, alongside her husband, was actively involved in the Dawn Baptist Church, Dawn Community Association, Amarillo Baptist Association, and WMU (Women's Missionary Union). She taught Sunday School, VBS, and also served as church custodian. Doris and her husband were also active supporters of Girl's Town and the local 4-H and FFA organizations. Doris was a loving homemaker, seamstress, outstanding cook, and yeast-bread maker, even though she did not like the taste of yeast bread. She assisted in preparing many meals for the Dawn Lions Club and local pheasant hunts. Most memorable and cherished are all the many hours and days she spent babysitting and nurturing her grandchildren with love and teaching them scriptures, Bible stories and songs about Jesus. She enjoyed helping them with crafts and teaching them to play games, although she later confessed, she really didn't like to lose.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, L.A. and Mary Elizabeth Smith, husband Leroy Johnson, 4 sisters, Lois Miller, Syble Hewitt, Ella Weeter, and Sarah Poe, and one daughter-in-law, Jana Rene Johnson.
Those left to cherish her memories include 3 sons, Leroy Johnson of Hereford, Ronald Johnson and wife Sharon of Dawn, and Jerry Johnson and wife Rhonda of Bryan, TX., 5 grandchildren, Cory Johnson and wife Holly of Hereford, Alissa Rincon and husband Emilio of Canyon, TX, Jarret May of Pueblo, Co., Jerad Johnson and wife Audrey of Bryan, TX., and Justin Johnson and wife M'Lynn of Bryan, TX., 12 great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Lily, Axel, Kylee, Makenna, Colton, Connor, Barrett, Case, Quinn, Kye, and Claire, 2 sisters-in-law, Ellen Ladd of Muleshoe, TX. and Jean Hearn of Mesquite, TX., several nieces and nephews, and a host of community friends.
