Avis Crystelle (Culp) Grisham, 91, went Home to her blessed Savior and Lord, her beloved husband, Milford, and family, on Monday, January 6, 2025, in Hereford.  A Celebration of Life Service is scheduled at the Hereford Church of the Nazarene on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Chris Valdez and Pastor Ted Taylor officiating.  Burial will follow in Rest Lawn Cemetery, under the care of Mendez & Mullins Funeral Home.  Viewing will be on Monday, January 13, 2025, at Mendez & Mullins Family Funeral Home­­­­­­­­ from 4:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.

The oldest of three children, Avis was born on July 26th, 1933, in Finney Switch (near Plainview), to Nealy and Esther (Bertelson) Culp.  She was raised on a farm in that vicinity.  From her stories, she had a wonderful childhood. In 1951, she graduated as a Valedictorian of her high school class at Kress High School.  In 1952, she attended Wayland Baptist College for one year.  There she met her future husband, Milford Grisham.  Milford had just graduated from Wayland Baptist College in 1952.  Prior to this, her family had moved to Hereford in 1951.  Milford and Avis were married on June 7, 1953, in Hereford.  Milford passed away 3 days prior to their 65th wedding anniversary on June 4, 2018.

Having given her heart to the Lord when she was almost twelve, receiving Him as her personal Savior and Lord, she felt in her heart from that point on that she was called to be a missionary.  Soon after they were married, they moved to Portland, OR, to go to Wings of Healing Bible School and prepare for the mission field.  Ironically, she had prayed that He would send her anywhere except to Africa.

In 1954, while in Portland, their first daughter, Rebecca, was born.   In the fall of that year, they went as missionaries to Africa.  They went to Agogo, (Gold Coast), Ghana, for two years, sponsored by the Bible college. While there, in 1956, their youngest daughter, Rachael, was born just six months prior to returning to the United States.

In 1961, they left again for the mission field, this time as independent missionaries.  They moved to Santa Fe, Santa Fe, Argentina, South America, only knowing one other missionary family in that city (and in the entire country, for that matter). Milford had taken Greek and Hebrew in college.  Now, in Argentina, neither one of them knew or spoke ANY Spanish!  At the ages of 28 and 31, with the help of many caring and loving Argentines, they learned Spanish the hard way ~ "trial and error," There they served the Lord faithfully for almost forty years.  They also became fluent in Spanish.  In 1998, the couple returned to the United States, semi-retiring, returning to Argentina several times for short periods of time.

While in Argentina, their house was always open to all.  They had so much company down through the years (missionaries, pastors and laypeople) that the neighbors nicknamed their house the "Grisham Hotel."  Peniel Bible School students also lived in their home during different periods of time, her daughters sharing her and their dad, as these different ones helped in the work, finished their Bible school training, or until they got married.

After moving back to the States, Avis also helped in the caring of her father-in-law and then her mother until the time of their passing.  They also served as pastors at Christian Assembly Church until 2016, when they fully retired and their son-in-law, Raul Valdez, became the pastor; although Avis continued to play the piano at every service until COVID shut everything down.

Avis was a beloved wife, mother, and homemaker, loving to sew, cook, can, etc.  Notable qualities were her consistency, determination, and dedication in the things she endeavored.  She always kept a diary in which she wrote daily (which she faithfully did until the last weeks prior to her death).  A devout Christian, Avis, along with Milford, spent the first part of their mornings and the last part of their evenings reading from their Bible, drinking 'mate', and praying together (I do not know how many times down through the years they read the Bible together all the way through).  She also loved visiting with people and sharing God's Word with them.  In church and at different meetings, she was always found playing the accordion or piano.  She was also known and will always be remembered for her radiant smile.

We want to thank Hereford Nursing & Rehab for the care that they gave our mother in her last years during the time that she made it home.  She loved to play hymns on the piano and would do so every Wednesday morning for several years, or when one of the residents wanted to hear her play.  I do not think she ever told anyone that she could not play for them.  She loved to play, and they loved to listen and sing along while she did so.

Avis is survived by her 2 daughters, Rebecca (Grisham) Valdez and husband Raul of Hereford, and Rachael (Grisham) Caraffa and husband Julio of Santa Fe, Argentina; 3 sisters-in-law, Joan Culp of Amarillo, Betty Culp of Phoenix, AZ, and Earlene Grisham of Council Grove, KS; 5 grandchildren, Eric Valdez and wife Michelle of Amarillo, Gabriel Caraffa and wife Evelyn of Santa Fe, Argentina, Pastor Chris Valdez and wife Candice of Lampasas, Melina Cuttela and husband Guillermo of Santa Fe, Argentina, and Maxi Caraffa and wife Belén of Santa Fe, Argentina; 7 prized great-granddaughters, Ludmila Caraffa, Lexi Valdez (and fiancée Zach Camacho), Abby Valdez, Justina Caraffa, Allison Valdez, Gianella Cuttela, and Guillermina Cuttella; 1 prized great-grandson, Gino Caraffa (and a little brother, Pietro Caraffa, 'on the way', due in February); several nieces and nephews; cousins; extended family; and a host of many dear friends in the United States and Argentina.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Niles Culp and Richard Culp; 1 brother-in- law, Jim Grisham; many uncles and aunts; and numerous cousins.

Avis tenía casi doce años cuando aceptó a Jesucristo como su Salvador y Señor y sintió el llamado para el campo misionero.   Poco después de que se casaran, se mudaron a Portland, Oregón, para asistir a la escuela Bíblica "Wings of Healing". preparándose para el campo misionero. Lo irónico fue que había orado que Dios la enviara a cualquier lugar menos África.

En 1954, mientras vivían en Portland, su primera hija, Rebecca, nació.  En el otoño de ese año salieron para África como misioneros.  Bajo la supervisión de la escuela Bíblica, fueron a Agogo, (Gold Coast), Ghana, por dos años.  En 1956, durante su estadía allí, su segunda hija, Raquel, nació, seis meses antes de que regresaran a los Estados Unidos.

En 1961, nuevamente volvieron a salir al campo misionero, esta vez como misioneros independientes.  Llegaron a Santa Fe, Santa Fe, Argentina, en América del Sur, no conociendo a nadie más en el país más que a otra familia misionera que vivía en la misma ciudad.  Milford había estudiado griego y hebreo en la universidad.  Ahora, en Argentina, ni el uno ni el otro hablaban o sabían una palabra en castellano.  A las edades de 28 y 31, con la ayuda de muchos argentinos cariñosos y amados, aprendieron castellano, aprendiéndolo de la manera difícil ~ "prueba y error".  Allí, sirvieron fielmente al Señor por casi cuarenta años.  Con el tiempo, llegaron a hablar castellano con fluidez.  En 1998, la pareja regresó a los Estados Unidos, semi-jubilados, retornando a Argentina varias veces por cortos períodos de tiempo.

Durante el tiempo que estuvieron en Argentina, las puertas de su hogar siempre estaban abiertas a todos.  Tenían tanta visita a través de los años (misioneros, pastores y laicos) que los vecinos les dieron el sobrenombre de "El Hotel Grisham".  Estudiantes de la escuela Bíblica Peñiel también vivieron en su casa durante diferentes períodos de tiempo, sus hijas compartiendo a sus padres con ellos, mientras estos jóvenes ayudaban en el ministerio, terminaban su colegio, o se casaban.

Después de regresar a los Estados Unidos, Avis ayudó en el cuidado de su suegro y después de su mamá hasta que ambos fallecieron.  También sirvieron como pastores en la iglesia Christian Assembly hasta 2016, cuando se jubilaron por completo, y su yerno, Raúl Valdez, tomó el pastorado; aunque Avis continuó tocando el piano hasta que COVID cerró todo.

Avis, era una amada esposa, madre, y excelente ama de casa.  Cualidades notables eran su constancia, su determinación y dedicación en todas las cosas que ella procuraba. Desde muy jovencita comenzó a escribir un diario, en el cual escribió fielmente por el resto de su vida, (escribió en ella hasta pocas semanas antes de fallecer).  Una cristiana devota, Avis, junto con Milford, pasaban la primera parte de cada mañana y la última parte de sus tardes, juntos, leyendo la Biblia, tomando mate, y orando (no sé cuántas veces, a través de los años, leyeron la Biblia completa de tapa a tapa).  Ella encontraba mucho gozo en visitar con gente y compartir la Palabra del Señor con ellos.  En la iglesia y diferentes reuniones o cultos, siempre se la encontraba tocando el acordeón o el piano.  También siempre será recordada por su radiante sonrisa.

Queremos agradecer a Hereford Nursing & Rehab por el respeto que le brindaron a nuestra madre en sus últimos años en el lugar que fue su hogar.  Le encantaba tocar himnos en el piano, y lo hizo cada miércoles por la mañana por varios años, o cuando uno de los otros residentes del hogar quería escucharla tocar.  Creo que nunca rehusó tocar si alguien quería oír música o cantar cánticos.  Amaba la música, y ellos gozaban en oírla y cantar junto con ella mientras ella tocaba el piano.

Sobreviven a Avis sus dos hijas, Rebecca (Grisham) Valdez y su esposo Raúl Valdez de Hereford y Rachael (Grisham) Caraffa y su esposo Julio Caraffa de Santa Fe, Argentina; tres cuñadas, Joan Culp de Amarillo, Betty Culp de Phoenix, AZ, y Earlene Grisham de Council Grove, KS; cinco nietos, Eric Valdez y su esposa Michelle de Amarillo, Pastor Gabriel Caraffa y su esposa Evelyn de Santa Fe, Argentina, Pastor Chris Valdez y esposa Candice de Lampasas, Melina Cuttela y esposo Guillermo Cuttela de Santa Fe, Argentina, y Maxi Caraffa y esposa Belén Chiani de Santa Fe, Argentina. Siete preciosas bisnietas, Ludmila Caraffa, Lexi Valdez (y fiancé Zach Camacho), Abby Valdez, Justina Caraffa, Allison Valdez, Gianella Cuttela y Guillermina Cuttela; un precioso bisnieto Gino Caraffa y un hermanito en camino a nacer en febrero, Pietro Caraffa; varios sobrinos y sobrinas, primos y familia extendida; y una multitud de amados amigos en los Estados Unidos y Argentina.

Fue precedida en su muerte por sus padres; su esposo; dos hermanos, Niles Culp y Richard Culp; un cuñado, Jim Grisham; muchos tíos y tías; y numerosos primos.
