Alfredo (Freddie) Fernandez Barrera, Sr., aged 84, a beloved long-time resident of Hereford, Texas, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2023, in Amarillo, Texas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, officiated by Monsignor Joseph Bixenman and Father Scott Raef, followed by burial at St. Anthony's Cemetery. Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford, Texas, have been entrusted with the arrangements and services. A viewing will take place on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, from 4:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home, with a rosary to begin at 6:00 PM.

Alfredo (Freddie) was born on September 10, 1938, in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, to Tomas and Carmen Barrera. He married the late Virginia (Vicky) Mendoza on July 28, 1958, in Laredo, Texas. Shortly after marrying the love of his life, he and Virginia (Vicky) moved to Hereford, Texas, making it their cherished home. Alfredo (Freddie) worked for Gifford Hill for 25 years. In the 1970s, he and his son, Freddy Jr., owned and operated Freddie's Pipeline and Irrigation. Alfredo (Freddie) was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, a lifelong friend and supporter of the Capuchin nuns of Amarillo, Texas, a Cursillista, a devout Catholic, and devoted to the Virgen de Guadalupe. He took great pride in becoming an American citizen and had a profound love for the USA. Alfredo (Freddie) had a passion for sports, staying updated on current events, and cherishing moments spent with family and friends. He had a warm and welcoming demeanor, making everyone he met feel special. Alfredo (Freddie) enjoyed listening to devotionals, relishing Braum's strawberry ice cream, and showcasing his culinary skills in the kitchen, which he learned from his late wife. However, Freddie's deepest and most precious love was for his family.

Alfredo (Freddie) leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories, cherished by his children: Alfredo (Freddy) Barrera, Jr. and his wife Marisa of Hereford, Texas; Imelda DeLaCerda and her husband Ramon of Amarillo, Texas; Thelma Elizondo and her husband Reynaldo of McAllen, Texas; Sandra Peña and her husband Jerry of Dimmitt, Texas; Cynthia Cross and her husband Dr. Damon of Amarillo, Texas; and son/nephew Francisco (Frank) Bravo and his wife Maria (Cuca) of Hereford, Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Carmela Salinas, and her husband Encarnacion of Twin Falls, Idaho; a special goddaughter, Sister Veronica Fiscal, Capuchina; 19 grandchildren; Christie Barrera Peña, Christopher Barrera, Cindy Gardea, Freddy Barrera III, Saul Villarreal, Naomi Nicely, Erika Maltos, Patricia Rodriquez, Azariah DeLaCerda, Andrea Anguiano, Jessica Castro, Stephanie Saucedo, Myra Hill, Fabian Peña, JJ Peña, Carmen Peña-Sepeda, Dr. Blake Cross, Cody Cross and Isabella Cross; 47 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Alfredo (Freddie) also leaves behind many loyal comrades who became his best friends, including farmers and ranchers he met during his work in the pipeline industry. The family expresses their deep appreciation and love for these individuals, too many to name.

Alfredo (Freddie) is preceded in death by his parents, Tomas and Carmen Barrera; his in-laws, Antonio and Ruperta Mendoza; a daughter Carmen Barrera; a son, Eric Barrera; granddaughters, Amanda Castro and Victoria Peña; brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, Anselmo and Elvira Gonzales; and his siblings, Tomas Barrera, Olga Elena Bravo, and Rebeca Ruiz.
